Traveler ReviewsWhat is all the fuss about?

I agree with the previous review. After all the hype in all of the guidebooks this was a big disappointment. It is a modest set of pavilions and a somewhat interesting eclectic set of personal effects and decorative objects. No grand statues. No elegant reliefs. No slabs of marble. No masterpiece paintings. This must have been quite a budget conscious sultan.
Be careful when you visit to remember that there are two separate entrances, which is bizarre and inconvenient. The person who wrote the first review seems only to have found the first one. The larger part of the Keraton requires exiting the front part and re-entering (additional admission fee) behind the first part. The second part is bigger and better, but not by that much. Nowhere in the first part do they tell you that you need to re-enter.
Anti-climactic

When Lonely Planet listed Kraton as the top tourist attraction in Yogyakarta, I was expecting more. This is the palace of the king of Yogya, and 25,000 people supposedly live there. You're only allowed to see the front entrance, which is set up as a mini-open air museum. It takes about 10 minutes to walk around, and there's not much to see. The display of old costumes is interesting, but small.
With that having been said, there's not much to do in Yogyakarta, so if you're there anyway, you might as well spend the 30 cents to visit Kraton.
