Visited here as a special treat whilst on a weekend break in Wollongong. The restaurant recommends you make a reservation which we did, however at 8.30pm on a Saturday evening, it was not too busy.
Caveau is an intimate restaurant (they do apparently have a larger private room upstairs, but we did not see this) with tables respectfully spaced so you don't overhear the conversations of tables around you. We were greeted at the door and shown to a table, and shown the menu. We accepted the suggestion of a glass of champagne to start and we were left to peruse the menu. We chose the 7 course degustation menu, with matched wines at $140 per head, which proved to be excellent value! Staff were happy to select white wines to match my meal as I am not a fan of red wine. Sacrilege I know!
Food was beautifully presented, and the tastes were exquisite. Every course was yet another heavenly combination of textures and flavours. The main of the evening was venison and this was cooked to perfection. My firm favourite of the evening was the caramalised lemon tart served with earl grey ice cream, but I do have a sweet tooth!
Service was some of the most professional I have ever experienced, with waiting staff at hand whenever needed, but never overbearing, and all courses and wines introduced and explained with a smile. I highly recommend Caveau for a romantic meal or a dinner with a few friends and am already planning my second visit :)
Fine dining in Wollongong

I have only attended this restaurant once.
The food was very good and the service outstanding, but you pay for it!!!
They say it's really "good Sydney food at Wollongong prices" and that may be true for those who are "into" degustation menus and the like, but I prefer a really good meal and a little less "fine dining".
Cooking school!

The wife and I have had a wonderful meal here. But someone treated us to the cooking school and I thought that was worth a review. Once Sunday a month Peter hosts a cooking school. Ours was wonderful. Peter does a perfect job of demonstrating three dishes -- entree, main, and dessert. Each dish is designed perfectly for a person with some knowledge of cooking. Everyone then prepares his or her own dishes. But Peter having taken care of the toughest aspects of the preparation, so it is more like self-assembly. Each dish was amazing (we enjoyed the wine pairings, too). I have since prepared two of the dishes at home to great reviews. If you're considering something different, this is a gret option.
