The statue of Eternal Youth is always referred to as the "Golden Boy". He stands atop the Manitoba Legislature in downtown Winnipeg. Set in place in 1919, the graceful statue carries a sheaf of grain symbolizing the fruits of labour. The torch held high above his head as he strides forward calls on the youth of Manitoba to join in the pursuit and building of a more prosperous future. The Golden Boy faces north, looking toward Manitoba's rich natural resources in mining, fishing, forestry and hydroelectricity. The Golden Boy has become an internationally recognized symbol of Manitoba's achievements and proud heritage.
In 2002 the Golden Boy was removed and underwent a re-gilding process to undo the decades of weathering. In October of that year in front of a crowd of thousands, Queen Elizabeth herself while on a visit to Winnipeg flipped the switch to floodlights on the improved statue. It now stands gleaming again, day and night, visible from most of the city.
