529 is commonly viewed as the best restaurant in Winnipeg. Whether it is or not can be debated, but it is certainly in the top few and the pricing is at the top. The very top!
529 is located in a 100 year old mansion on Winnipeg's most prestigious street. The setting for a restaurant is wonderful with a number of smaller rooms that hold 5 or 6 tables each.
The service is professional and efficient and well dressed. This is not a "Hi, my name's Mandy and I'll be your server tonight." type of place. This is a high end, professional restaurant where the focus is on the customer and not mindless blather between server and customer.
The menu has a large selection of beef as well as fish and seafood. If you have not been to 529 before the waiter will bring around a platter of raw meat to explain the various cuts available. Odd, but sensible all at the same time.
The food is wonderful. As others have suggested it is quite pricey but it is simply the best steak in town. Comparisons to The Keg or Hy's are questionable. No doubt you can get a good or very good steak at Hy's and The Keg but you get an excellent steak at 529.
The wine list is massive. The leather bound tome is the size of a phone book. No kidding.
Menu is a la carte (which confuses the common folk) but the assortment of sides is good. And to be sure, they are for sharing. An order of asparagus or steamed spinach is enough to feed the Russian army.
You won't find "challenging" or "fusion" or "interesting" food at 529 as that's not what this place is. This is a steak house serving top quality product. Plain and simple but high end.
Reservations recommended. It's certainly a special occassion only restaurant for all but those families earning $250,000 a year.
Best Steaks in Winnipeg!

Wow, I don't think I've ever had a steak that was more juicy and flavourful than the steak I got from 529 Wellington.
Simply AMAZING!
The only negative I'd have is that when you order steak, all you get is steak, no sides like veggies, mashed potatoes or baked potatoes. But trust me, you don't want to order any sides... you'll barely be able to finish the steak!!!
I ordered a baked potato on the side and I couldn't even scratch the surface after finishing my peppercorn steak.
What steak should I get?
Porterhouse or Peppercorn steak.
Porterhouse is a bit more juicy and flavourful, but the aroma or the peppercorn is also amazing.
