All the monument are the best at night. But the Lincoln memorial is stunning all on it's own. I loved the inscription on the walls.
Would definitely do again...

Lots of steps but well worth the climb. My children studied Abraham Lincoln in school last year and this was a must do on our trip this past June. The awe you experience is just over-whelming.
Must see

This is a must see when you are in DC. In addition to the statue of Lincoln, his inauguration speech is carved into one of the interior walls. This is also a great place to spend some time out of the sun and to get some good shots of the reflecting pool and washington monument.
Crowded, but impressive

It is quite a walk from the Metro, especially on a hot summer day, but once you get there it is worth it. During the days it is a bit too crowded for any type of contemplation, so take it in during the evening or early morning. As a foreigner, it is easier to apprechiate the skillful artwork than the history of the man, but it is still a great site. On a side note, it is also one of few shelters from rain in that part of the city.
A MUST!! Parents/educators please read

I lived in DC for 6 months while doing an internship in the House of Reps. My home was just 2 blocks from the Capitol and at night my roommates and I would walk to the Lincoln Memorial and I have to say that is the most inspiring walk that you can take at nighttime.
I HIGHLY recommend doing this but be sure to go in a group (safety first at night). Ending a walk on the top of the steps right in front of Lincoln is so moving and then turning around to see the National Mall before you is just an overwhelming feeling for any American. We would always go really late at night and even the early morning (midnight-3 am); this is the best time to go because there is usually no one else around and you can appreciate the memorial the way it was intended.
During tourist season it?s really hard to take in the full emotion of the monument with school groups and unsupervised children running around. Try to in months like Jan. Feb. Oct. and Nov.
Note to parents and teachers: if you take your children to these places please, please, PLEASE educate them on who Lincoln was and what he did for our country. Point out where MLK did his I have a Dream Speech. D.C. is a great place to educate kids on USA history. PLEASE talk to them about being respectful. Not only does it make you children look unappreciative for the liberties that they have, it ruins the experience for others.
