Traveler DescriptionA towering statue of Jesus Christ (Cristo Redentor) perched atop the Corcovado Mountain is accessible by a steep train or winding car ride followed by numerous staircases, but it?s worth the trek to see this 98-foot statue up close and the whole of Rio below.

Unbelievable view of Rio, was utterly breathtaking. Nothing can compare to the feeling of awe that overcomes you when looking down on the great city of Rio. I was there in 2005 with work (onboard a cargo ship) - We hired a taxi for the day from the port town we were based in and thus avoided the log train (have heard that queues can be a nightmare)
If you do find yourself in Rio, do not let the opportunity to visit Corcovado pass you by. A genuine 'once-in-a-lifetime- experience.
On top of the world!

We got a local bus from Copacabana to Cosme Velho. Then got the wonderfull cog railway up to the top of Corcovado. There are some wonderful views on the way up. Once at the top you do not want to come back down, its just awesome up there!!
Its quite surprising just how much is no the top, shops, food outlets and underneath Christ a little chapel.
The views across Rio are just wonderfull, we were very lucky having wall to wall sunshine while we where there, couldn't have wished for better conditions. Its does get very busy up there. Once we peeled ourselves away we were treated to the samba band on the way down.
All in all a fantastic experience.
The most beautiful spot in Rio

We went up early in the morning. It is a good idea, as coach load of tourists arrive. Where you queue up is a beautiful description of the place and how it was built and what the parts are. Good idea to read it. Once the tram comes then get a place at the back as you go up. for filming it is great. Once up there there is an escalator for those not that fit or elderly and disabled. But the view is breath taking. There are shops and food outlets, worth getting a prezzy and a cool fruit juice freshly made. Once on the way back I would sit on the front tram as again the view is great on the way down. You may get Samba palyers who are busking. Really cool and great atmosphere. Round the corner is a Musuem of Art. If you are into learning about the history worth checking out.
Must Do

You can't go to Rio without making the trip up the mountain. The Cog Train is the best way to get up. I took a taxi up and the train down. The taxi ride up was pretty fun (or scary depending on your fear tolorance). Lots of curves, very steep in places.
Hopefully the weather will be clear when you go. Take a jacket, it's cooler and windier than the beach.

Of course it has always been a dream to see the Statue of Christ, but he is so big and rises so high as you stand beneath. It's breathtaking and a little emotional. It may have more meaning for certain religious groups, but this honoring of Christ also has history and is quite a feat for the people who erected this many years ago.
