nice museum ... go elsewhere for lunch
Reviewed by A TripAdvisor Member on Sep 23, 2008

$77.00 for lunch ... and not alot of it - i small appertizer and 2 salads... they bang you $3 bucks for bottled water the minute you sit down - per person ... $14.00 for a Ceaser salad that had about 6 leaves of romain lettuce ... we should have known the white table clothes at lunch was a sign ... should have looked at the menu before we sat down ... the baked alaska for dessert was quite good though ... the museum is very nice and worth the ride over ... beautiful artwork and garden with sculptures ... have lunch somewhere else ... you'll save about $50 bucks ...

Best on the Island, But Doesn't Hold Up to World-Class

My wife and I read about this restaurant in our guide book and decided one afternoon to give it a shot. Being the gringo tourists that we are, we were in shorts, tennis shoes and tank tops. The restaurant was described as creole ? so we imagined pretty much a dive sort of place. Wrong. This place much be one of the fanciest in town. We almost didn?t walk in, but we?re foodies and had such trouble finding it (its inside the Museum of Art), we felt we had a duty to complete our mission. Although the host gave us the look over, he graciously sat us (at a crappy table, but hey we were walk ins). Now, we come from a great foodie town ? San Francisco. And when you compare Pikayo to some of our best in SF, they don?t really measure up. However, we weren?t really excited about any Puerto Rican food we had in our trip thus far, so in comparison, this was the island?s French Laundry. We ordered four appetizers and one entree, all to share. The service staff was fantastic, except for one gaffe (five dishes and they brought five forks and five knives all at the same time), and separated each of the dishes so we didn?t have to spoon off of one plate. My wife is pregnant, so we weren?t drinking, which makes places like this hard. We asked the waiter if the bartender had anything that would pair well, else we?d be stuck with the obligatory iced tea or coke. Although it took a while, he came back with a virgin mojito, complement with muddled mint. Nice. Not the most innovative, but definite A+ for rising up to the challenge!

Not a Great Experience

I called the restaurant directly and made a reservation. They repeated my name to me and pronounced it correctly. They did not ask how to spell it. Arrived at the restaurant and there was no host, but I noticed that there were only three names left on the list for the evening. One was my name, badly misspelled (it is a simple, two syllable name). When the host arrived and I gave my name, he looked at the list and then informed me that I had no reservation. He asked what hotel I was staying at and who made the reservation. I told him that I made it directly. I pointed to the name on the list that had to be my name and was told that "maybe" that was my reservation. He then said he may have a table for me anyway (as if he was doing me a favor). I'm sure the food is good. That is why I made the reservation, but being told you do not have a reservation is not a nice way to start a very expensive meal. After we were seated and water was poured (with being asked if we wanted bottled water) I noticed on the menu that the charge for water was $3.00 per person. Coupled with the valet parking (you have no choice but to get valet parking after the museum closes for the evening) you are out $16.00 just to sit down and look at the menu. I was asked if I would like a cocktail or the wine list (not sure why you can't have both) so decided to I asked for the wine list and it was delivered. The next time someone came by the table (a good two or three minutes later) I asked about a cocktail list and was told they didn't have a one. I asked for a suggestion and the best they could come up with was "Mojito". I declined and the waiter moved on. The wine list was disappointing. In terms of whites, the largest section was ?California Chardonnays?. I have trouble pairing those with food. The "Other Whites" section was also about 40% Chardonnay from places outside of California. The selection of Reds was better. Given the prices (e.g. $47.00 for a fillet) and the fact that we then went without our waiter for another five minutes we decided to leave. When we walked past our waiter he joked about us ?both having to use the rest room at the same time? and we just smiled. He then followed us out of restaurant into the museum lobby and asked what was wrong. I said that I just wasn?t having as nice an experience as I expected. He asked if we were staying ?at the Ritz?. We said ?no, we?re at the Hilton?. I?m not sure what that had to do with anything, but he never left a message at the hotel apologizing or inviting us back. I don?t mind spending a great deal of money on a truly great meal, but I expect it to be a great experience from the time I make the reservation until the time I leave. I certainly don?t expect a poor reservation process, paying for water I didn?t even ask for and then trying to match my meal with Mojitos and Chardonnay.

Beautiful

The restaurant is extremely beautiful. A bit noisy when they have activities in the museum(there was a wedding going on while we were having dinner). I tried a tasting meny that they offer and I did not find it overpriced for the amount of food. The portions are small but enough to get full. The wine selection was very well paired with the food. The service was really good. We got the meet the chef and had an excellent evening. However because of our experience and criticism we overheard from other tables it seems like they tend to overcook shellfish. We ordered the lobster and it was really inedible. We had to send it back and the second time it was ok but not great. But I can say the Foie gras was cooked to perfection and all the sauces on all the plates we ate married really well. The Gandules Rissoto is spectacular. I also want to add that the chocolate souffle and the cheese souffle are worth the 20 minutes wait while it cooks. It is the best chocolate souffle I have ever eaten.

150.00 for lunch enough said

We would not recommend Pikayo unless you want the experience. I agree with the majority of the reviews. Pikayo is over priced for the service and food. We ordered a salad, 1 order (2) scallops, sea bass, and shrimp (4 total). The shrimp came out over cooked. We sent it back and they brought scallops (these were good) but were charged even though I was done with my lunch by the time the next plate came out. I am sure if going to a restaurant like this is normal for you....it will be enjoyable if not it will not meet your expectations for the cost.
