At the time of visiting the pathways up to the higher castle were closed due to the lower castle being rebuilt. So instead of walking up we took the funicular railway which you reach on the opposite side of the hill behind the archaeological museum. The views from the top over Vilnius are very good. Even better are the views from the top of Gediminas Tower, which is all that's left of the caslte. There are interesting displays on the history of the castle as well as some bits of armour. It is worth the trip, for the views alone.
Best Views in Old Town

The museum here is very small, and (except for those fascinated by 16th century weaponry) rather dull, although there are some great diaoramas showing how the castle area of Vilnius changed and developed over the centuries that are worth looking at.
But the reason to pay the admission is not the museum itself: it's the view! For a really low rate (and don't forget to bring your student ID if you have one), you can climb to the roof of the tower and look out over all of Old Town Vilnius. It's definately worth it.
You can reach the top of Gediminas hill (where the museum is) very easily by taking the path that starts up the wooded hill from behind the Cathedral (on the Pilies gatve side), or by taking the funicular that is accessible from the courtyard of the Lithuanian Archeology Museum (on Arsenalo gatve). The walk is pleasant though, through a nice woods overlooking a small stream (the Vilnele, for which Vilnius is named), so I'd recommend using your feet!
