Inside the gate of dawn is a picture of the Virgin Mary which many people come to see on a pilgimage... I wasn't on pilgrimage, but I did think the gate is a pretty wonderful sight. On one side it looks quite plain but once through into the old town there is a window above the archway where you can catch a glimpse of the picture. There is the opportunity to go up to see it closely, being careful of worshippers as you go. On one day we were there there was a congregation in the street having a service from a priest inside the gate! That was a surprising sight as I wasn't expecting it at all.
