Temple of Literature a MUST SEE in Ha Noi
Reviewed by A TripAdvisor Member on Sep 16, 2008

My husband and I recently visited Northern Vietnam... overall, we were disappointed with the trip, but the Temple of Literature was one of our highlights. Our guide provided us with a lot of interesting information about it history, it was clean, and quiet, and just a lovely afternoon. There were some ladies just outside the temple who were pretty pushy about selling their postcards, but other than that...no complaints! I highly recommend checking it out.

Temple of Literature - A Must See!

I nearly knocked this place off my itinerary thinking I'd be all "templed-out" by then. I'm so glad I didn't as it turned out to be one of my favorite sites in Hanoi! The Temple of Literature is the seat of Confucian education in Hanoi and it later on became the city's first university. A feeling of calm and serenity surrounds you the minute you walk through the first gate and stroll along the green-lined path, bordered by lotus ponds on each side. Another gate will greet you and usher you into a courtyard with a pond. To its left are rows and rows of turtles carved in stone. In Vietnam, the turtle is a symbol of long-life and wisdom. Above the turtles' heads, are the names of graduates who passed many rigid exams -- the school's way of honoring and immortalizing its most successful graduates. The area furthest from the gate is a "shrine" for Confucious and Buddha, where many loyal patrons come to pay tribute and show their respect.

Among the most interesting sites in Hanoi

In my opinion, this is the only large "classical" historic place to see in Hanoi. It's decent sized with well kept grounds and buildings that look historic. In other words, there's enough of an old world look and feel with enough upkeep that you know this temple/university is a very important historical site. It's relatively quite inside, so you can get away from the maddening buzz of the traffic for a short bit. Each gate is a photo opportunity as is the farthest in temple and turtle shaped seats of the scholars. A definite must see in Hanoi.

Beautiful Respite from traffic and air of Hanoi, but watch your change.

The Temple of Literature is a must see in Hanoi. Lovely Gardens, a serene set of buildings. When we were there a huge Vietnamese youth group was visiting and that enhanced my musings about the virtues of a culture that has a temple to Literature in the first place. Check out the books in the giftshop. It was hilarious to see the bios of Reagan, Bush, Hillary and Bill Clinton translated into Vietnamese. One note of caution......the female ticket taker, definitely tried to shortchange us, and when we caught her, she tried to cover by telling us we had only given her 10000 dong. Bad move as she had already given us about 25000 in dong, so it was illogical. She became very angry at being caught, but did give us the correct change.......

This temple was one of the best places to go see in Ha Noi. The stelae immortalized the names of candidates who passed the rigorous exams. When I used to live in Ha Noi, I would come here to get away from the hubbub of the city and breathe in the history.
