AN EXCELLENT ISLAND TO VISIT AND LIVE
Reviewed by A TripAdvisor Member on Aug 23, 2008

We experienced incredible service. It was so wonderful we did not want to leave. The Sands hotel was an incredible place to be. The rooms were excellent and so was the staff. The restaurant at the Sands is excellent. Most of the local restaurants had excellent well cooked meals. There is one restaurant to avoid, the Tiki Hut. The food did the island no justice. They either over cooked or under cooked meals and the drinks were watered down. The hole in the wall and Horse eye Jacks serve excellent island food. A small local Caribbean restaurant down the street from comfort suite served excellent Caribbean restaurant food. A diner at Saltmill served excellent breakfast and lunch. If you have money to spend stay and eat at the Somerset resort, it?s expensive but fabulous. We had friends staying there and the service was wonderful, the grounds the staff and food were also wonderful. When visiting this island stay seven days or more, it?s a peaceful relaxing place to be.

Amazing destination that hasn't been over taken by tourism!!

I went to the Turks in June of this year (2008) and I just loved it. We had spent a few days in the Bahamas before hand and a night in Miami afterwards, therefore we were able to shop and party in those destinations. (Don't we party and shop enough at home!!) In Turks we simply relaxed. Not to say there isn't night life, we went to the White Party at Nikki Beach and stayed up dancing to into the small hours in the Irish bar!) We are both in our late 20's and early 30's and I just can't say enough how much we loved the island. The beaches are just gorgeous, some of the best I have seen in the world, including the Caribbean. I think only Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands could compete! If you enjoy snorkelling or diving then you couldn't find anywhere better, especially as the water is so clear and with the sudden ocean wall drop it is good for all levels. As for Grace Bay, the staff were wonderful, they couldn't have done enough. The rooms are fresh, large and are luxurious. Yes the service is in the typical caribbean, at a slightly slower pace than the rest of the world, but you are in the Caribbean, don't forget! If you want cold, fast, unfriendly service go elsewhere! The Caribbean warmth and genuine chattiness is not found everywhere. Grace Bay offers fantastic spa treatments, esp in the white tents on the beach, I don't think you can relax more, then when you can hear the sea lapping against the shore. As for the seafood, wow, both here as well as in the Bahamas. the seafood was amazing. I have not tasted such wonderful succelent king prawns for a long time. They were huge! I feel the holiday was worth every penny, and I just hope that the island does not become too over develeoped !!

fantastic

I thought I would write a short review as the ones here are 4 years out of date and so misleading.... Grace bay is stunning, the pictures don't do it justice. the water in the summer months is lovely and warm ..during the first few months of the year the water (Atlantic Ocean) gets rather chilly. There has been some major building projects going on...these include new roads, condo blocks and more places to eat and drink, costs are about the same as in the UK or 40-50% more expensive than the costs in the USA. There are no fast food chains like KFC. Frankly if you stay somewhere along this section of coast you wont need to go anywhere else. People are friendly, they speak English, and if you drive they use the correct side of the road like we do in the UK, the LEFT..

Disappointed

Glad to have visited Provo for two weeks but thought the island very overrated. Stayed at the Alexandra right on Grace Bay and enjoyed the walks along the beach but there really isn't much else on the island!! Had a hired four wheel drive but there's nowhere special to go to! Expensive too. What happens to all the luxury - and VERY EXPENSIVE - condos when people get fed up and move on?

Road system is pitiful

Having been to Aruba, Bahamas, St. Croix, Cancun, Cozumel, Maui & Kauai, Grand Cayman, I think we have developed a pretty good sense of what to expect when traveling. The island of Providenciales will hopefully be in a couple of years more of what people are looking for when they go on tropical vacations. Shopping is very minimal and the shops that are located in the larger resorts (Beaches, Sands, etc.) charge you to come on their property. There is an IGA if you need groceries. The road system on the island is horrendous. If you rent a car, I highly recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle. 90% of the roads are not paved or even graded, or so badly neglected the wear & tear on the vehicles is above & beyond. There is construction everywhere. They are building approx. 15-20 resort and/or condo complexes, so it is a mess with the dust and potholes. There are numerous abandoned buildings and the movie theater had a fire when Bad Boys II was out and now it sits with no roof. This is just an indication of how poorly the island is maintained. There is no public transportation system, so taxis are it unless you rent a car/wreck. We knew the island was less developed, but there is a lot of misrepresentation on the travel/tourism websites as to the reality of the situation there. If you drive to the dead end of the road that ironically is around the corner from the Grace Bay area police location, you have drug dealers offering you stuff as you make your U-turn. In the week prior to our arrival, they had 3 armed robberies - they claim it is illegal Haitians on the island. The Grace Bay Beach area is the primo spot to be for tourist activities, resorts and snorkeling. Reef Peepers Snorkel Tours took us to some great sites and they do sunset cruises as well. The reef in front of the Coral Gardens has a great variety of fish, even nurse sharks and stingray. The local people are nice and if you need taxi service, I recommend Sonny's as he is reliable (we tried several). Fare from the airport to Turtle Cove area is $6-7.00 per person. The Tiki Hut & SharkBite restaurants at the Turtle Cove Marina are really good. We rented the Turtle Beach Villa, which is set up really nice for coming in off the beach and being able to rinse your stuff off. If you dive, the big disappointment is that no dive operators offer tanks for shore diving even though there is a reef system running along shore. We called all of them and the only one that possibly would do it at the Coral Gardens, has to accompany you, but he goes off island quite frequently so good luck there. The water is beautiful and the island itself is much like Aruba with the breezes and desert terrain. The cost of everything is similar to there as well. Even though they use the U.S. $, you can expect to pay $1.75 for every $1.00 you would spend here. Overall I am glad we went, but it is not someplace that I will be back to anytime soon with so many other places to explore.
