Traveler ReviewsSo-So

Here is my experience with GTI. I went on the Golden Circle Extreme tour, and before leaving I asked the company if the price of the snowmobile was 1 for one person or two people on the same snowmobile. They reasurred me that the price was for each person with their own snowmobile. However, when I got to the glacier I was told that I had to pay more for each person in my party to have their own. Outside of that, the guide was nice and encouraged questions, the group was small, and the car was comfortable. The driving can get boring, Iceland can be beautiful in parts, but for the most parts it's repetitive black and brown with little vegetation. During the drive I was expecting to be mystified by stories of Icelanding history/vikings/economic collapse/well, anything really. I got it in bits and pieces, but for the most part the driver was silent, so I guess that was my own misconception of the tour. As for GTI being the cheapest, I don't think so. Definitely saw cheaper out there, it might have been for a bus as opposed to a smaller car, but what's the difference if no one is really talking to you anyway. Also, when I tried to email GTI before leaving, I did it twice, I never got a response back and eventually had to call them. If you want to do the golden circle tour, let me suggest that you just drive yourself, being part of a tour bus really didn't seem worth it to me. Overall, I was left with a feeling of dissapointment, not so much due to the service, but that my expectations weren't meant after all the positive reviews that I read here. However, as a service, they did deliver on what they promised.
Above and Beyond our Expectations!

We just returned from a remarkable visit in Iceland which was booked on line using Go Travel Iceland (GTI). We were eleven people in our party with ages ranging from 3 to 67 and everyone loved this holiday. I was a bit skeptical booking on line especially since we prepaid using a wire transfer and because we were a bit wary of the recent volcanic eruptions, but Bob Murray assured us that if we made it there, it would be worth our while, and it absoulutely was! We were greeted at the airport immediately upon arrival and taken to our hotel. We stayed in the new tower at the Grand Hotel Reykjavik which was modern, extremely clean and had very accomodating staff. It included a full buffet breakfast which had enough variety to accomodate our young children and our vegetarian companions. We booked several day trips including the Golden Circle Tour, The Glacier Lagoon Tour and Cruise, Reykjavik sights, the Blue Lagoon and the West Iceland tour. It seemed like each tour was better than the last, and none of us could believe how much beauty there was to see in such a small country. All of the trips picked us up on time. We were on small vans/buses for all of our trips with the largest group having 23 guests and the others averaging 11-14. The guides (Bob and Gummi) were extremely knowledgeable and engaging and we were never rushed to move on. In fact, on 2 of the tours, additional attractions were added because the guides thought the children would enjoy them. GTI also facilitated a whale watching adventure for our group, and were very helpful in making recommendations for other things to do while in Iceland. This was a holiday we will always remember and it was made so due to the efforts of the staff at Go Travel Iceland. We will definately be contacting them when we are ready to return to explore the North of Iceland!
A mixed bag ...

We made three tours last week with GTI and had mixed experiences. To start with, I would point out that there are many tour companies with, more or less, equal offerings. It is worth the effort to read their tour descriptions carefully, compare prices and take note of which days a certain tour runs. Your actual experience will depend on the quality of the driver/guide you get, the kind of bus/car available and, of course, the weather! If you are a party of more than two it may well be preferable to read up carefully on a tour, rent a car and do it on your own (beware of Hertz - see separate posting!).
Returning to GTI:
On Sun Aug 22nd we did the Golden Cicle with GTI. Everything was perfect, not the least the guides Ragna and Bob.
On Monday we went on the Landmannalaugar tour. GTI used a minibus with a raised chassis and 4WD for this tour. There was a movable stairs to help ascending the bus, however, as both steps were cracked and sagging severly it was inadvisable to put your weight on them. The bus had bench-type seats, where the last two rows were very hard to get in and out of due to the narrow passage over the intruding rear wheel-well. We were a total of approx 12 persons on the tour, and the windows in the rear of the bus soon started misting up from condensation, limiting the view outside. The ventilation system gave the driver great trouble with both temperature and removing the condensation (which eventally became less). When reaching the gravel part of the road to L. the harsh rear suspension made the trip highly uncomfortable ("two peas in a tin can, being cooked besides!"). There was also such a racket that guiding by the driver became impossible. L. itself was very much worth a visit. We also noted that several apparently standard, full-size buses had made the trip, including crossing the shallow fords on the way. Visiting the explosion crater on the way back was spectacular, and also the only case where the 4WD was necessary. The detour a few kilometers along a road to the foothills of Mt.Hekla was a complete waste of time - the view from the main road is better and even offers some interesting ash fields, stritated with white/grey pumice. For this we paid a whopping ISK 25.000 per person - all in all a severly overpriced experience! I think GTI needs to review several aspects of this tour!
On Thursday we went with GTI on the Snaeffelsfell (?) tour, which was a very positive experience. GTI is particularly to be commended for running the tour in spite of only three paying customers, as well as for the comfortable SUV and the forthcoming driver.
To sum it up - GTI is probably not the single outstanding tour operator the TA reviews may lead you to believe. They have their ups and downs like everybody else! So shop around ...

On our recent (August, 2010) trip to Reykjavik, Iceland we used Go Travel for 2 excursions: the Golden Circle and the Glacier Lagoon Cruise. They really do an excellent job. It was nice to be in a small group (8). Getting out of Reykjavik and onto the tour instead of spending a great deal of time picking up people at various hotels was a nice plus. Ragna, our guide and driver for both trips (one 8 hrs. and the other 12hrs.) was a tireless storyteller and and excellent guide. The itineraries are well-planned with frequent stops and we never felt rushed or without access to food and/or facilities. I can heartily recommend both a trip to Iceland and booking with Go Travel!
Go Travel Iceland failed to turn up for golden circle tour
Reviewed by philandmei on Aug 24, 2010
On the recommendation of the positive reviews of Tripadvisor members I booked direct with the co-managing director, Odinn of Go Iceland Travel for the Golden Circle tour for four which was confirmed. We were on the Crown Princess ship and arrived at 7AM on the 2nd August 2010. We were instructed to meet the transport and guide at 8AM and pay on boarding the bus. Our party of four and two other Crown Princess passengers located a bus at 7.50AM but were really surprised to be told that the bus was already full with other passengers. The guide said he would contact the office to try to arrange further transport. He was in such a rush to get away we were left with no idea if further transport was coming. After waiting 30 minutes in high winds and rain we took a decision as a group to make other arrangements. In the event we sat in a coach for over an hour with another tour operator. We were facing the ship and the Tourist Office and saw no sign of a Go Travel Iceland transport turn up. Whilst the sales director maintains the driver turned up we do not believe this to be true.
I complained to the co-managing director, Quin who I now understand has quit the company following my complaint to them. I received a response from the Sales director who said we arrived at the port too early and were for pickup at 8.30AM (despite the fact the booking email said 8AM pickup) and we did not wait in the correct place for the bus (the husbands were waiting outside the terminal building and the wives? inside) and did not obtain a voucher from the terminal staff (Odinn emailed the voucher to me) In effect the sales director was placing the blame on us which we found disgraceful. I wrote a second email to the sales director who has not had the courtesy to respond or gives me the confidence that further similar service failures will not occur again.
This company may provide a good tour but have a ?plan B? up your sleeve if they fail to turn up. Better still, book with a more reliable company and one that does not distort the truth when things go wrong from their end.
