Seafood, AND whale
Reviewed by OrriBjornsson on Aug 26, 2010

This small restaurant in downtown Reykjavik is a must for everyone visiting Iceland. Here you cna get great seafood with a lot of special touch. You can get seabirds that taste like game. and to top it of you can get whalemeat. Whale is hunted in Iceland and 3 Frakkar has it on the menu. It is a red meat with some sea taste in it and it is healthy! The service si personnal and very friendly. You always want to come back. And if something goes wrong then just let them know and they will fix it on the spot, with joy.

Lovely meal and great service

We ate here on our last night in Reykjavik and had a lovely meal. We arrived early (before 6.30pm) without a reservation on a Saturday evening and although there were some diners already seated they managed to fit us in. The restaurant is in a quiet residential area half way up the hill on the way to Hallgrimskirkja from the centre of town. It is a cosy restaurant with a small conservatory and the service was very prompt and professional but not starchy. We didn't have a starter but the ones delivered to the neighbouring table looked apetizing. Apparently this restaurant is well known for serving good puffin and whale dishes etc. We both selected fish for our main course and I can definitely recommend the halibut in lobster sauce. The desert menu was fairly limited but they were all home-made and good quality (a short list of good home-made fare is infinitely preferable to a long list of stodge brought in from the local cash and carry). I had the creme brulee and my other half had the chocolate cake which was light as a feather. We finished off with coffee/tea which came with plain chocolate. All in all this was a very pleasant meal - good food, good service and a nice ambience. By the time we left it was pretty busy with most tables full and diners waiting at the bar, which shows how popular it is. If/when we return to Reykjavik we would definitely eat here again.

Easily one of Reykjavik's best restaurants

I had eaten here twice before so I knew what to expect. I recommend that you book a table as it's a small place and gets crowded very quickly. Tasting the food will tell you why. They also serve whale and horse meat, so if that bothers you, you should take this into consideration. Inside, it's really cosy (gezellig is a better description for those of you who speak Dutch) and is really welcoming on cold evenings. I had the plaice and the sauce was out of this world (the main reason I keep returning) and the fish really fresh. Bread and water was complimentary. For dessert, I had the skyr (Icelandic yoghurt) brulee: an excellent fusion of Icelandic and French cuisine. Bottles of wine might seem more expensive than in the rest of Europe, but I would say this is a mid-priced restaurant compared with the rest of Iceland, when taking everything into account. The staff members were friendly and seemed willing to put up with my questionable Icelandic.

Best of Reykjavik

Our best meal of the trip. Be sure to try the plokkfiskur. It's the best on the island.

Excellent!

After our city tour our guide recommended this restaurant. It was easy to find with a map and the address to hand. We were very lucky to get a table on a Saturday night as it was very busy when we arrived and everyone one else seemed to have made reservations. Staff were friendly and helpful. Our waitress was knowledgable about the food being served and gave recommendations. Tables were close but good atmosphere and looked very clean and tidy due to efficient staff. We tried smoked puffin and whale to start, then Shark and Haddock for mains. We both enjoyed the food and would definately recommend to others. I would say for Iceland the price was average.
