To have two Michelin?s stars is synonymous of a good restaurant. Except in France where the ?Red Guide.? is much more generous with its awards. Chez Dominque in Helsinki therefore is a good restaurant. But is it good enough for paying more than 200 ? for a surprise menu of four dishes (including desssert) and the proponed wines?. The question has no simple answer. In my case it would be a big no for the food and a perhaps for some of the wines proposed (no for the beer served with the oyster and the marinated Octopus, as first entree).
On the one hand, in Chez Dominique surprise menu is in my oppinion too close to what the chef wants for maximize profits of the restaurant (and not only for the minimal quantity of foods served in every dish). And on the other hand, the surprises of August 2008 have no attractive. In addition to the oyster and octopus mentioned, entrails and lamb, both as said in minimal quantity. Besides a quite normal dessert and a vulgar and extrasmile service -except for the wines- which recommended me (with just three tables and less that ten people in the restaurant) to choose the surprise menu because ?the kitchen is very busy". And which charged me two bottles of water of 750 ml. each (8 ? the bottle). (I am sure I didnt drink more than half of one of them). So, next time in Helsinki I will not be back Chez Dominique. I am sure about that.
