Traveler Reviews

the most amazing experience
Reviewed by tahleispain on Aug 22, 2010

After asking at a travel agency who had no idea what they were talking about it was a relief to get to the Biking Dutchman and get some reliable information. They know what they do and they do it well. We did the Cotopaxi one day tour and had a fantastic time. The scenery is amazing and the whole day was just breathtaking. The guide, Fernando, was brilliant. His knowlede of the area really added to the experience. Lunch was great too. I'd definitely do it again, or any of their other tours. Highly recommend.

Cotopaxi Ride

On August 9, 2010 we were picked up at our hotel (13 in our group) and we drove to Cotopaxi for our mountain bike adventure. I kind of expected to do more than bike down the same road we drove up, but it was a great experience and a great deal of fun. One piece of advice for Biking Dutchman is that they should do the safety briefing at the bottom and not at the top where we had very high winds and very cold temps.

Bike and have some fun!

We spent the day on Cotopaxi with the biking dutchman team. The day starts with a ride to the mountain with bikes. Since it is 7am, we thought we might catch an open breakfast area, but seems that ecuadorians do not open until 8am- the trip involves a stop so we could pickup a few items- this would be my only criticism as they stop at essentially a 7-11 convenience store and I would rather have them find a cute ecuadorian bakery and give some money to the "people" rather than the large chain store- anyway Off to the hill, you travel up the mountain and we were lucky that the day was clear (isH) and had good views. It is really cold (remember that it is a glacier) you must wear layers- we wore ski fleeces and mittens and actually still felt the cold until about 1/2 way down. Maybe the company should rent those ponchos for the few that arrive in shorts thinking it will be warm- It is a downhill roll on the gravel road, not challenging except for the slight uphill which even the best of us walked due to the altitude and inability to breathe! (kinda embarrassing!) That said stopping where you want to take spectacular photos beats the others in the van who drive to the top and just leave. Lunch was at the roadside and although filling, could have been a bit more fun on a few blankets and with more typical ecuadorian food- they served italian pasta and brownies and tea (on a rafting trip the guacamole- rice etc was just perfect) Off to the finish and back to quito- we convinced them to stop at a local store for icecream which hit the spot!

Could do better

We did the one day trip to Cotopaxi today. Email from the company said the tour would leave at 7am and suggested we get a cab from Quito old town at 6:30. Glad we ignored that advice and got one a bit later - we arrived by 6:50 (8 minute journey) to find no sign of anyone and the shop all locked up. No-one arrived until 7:10, and then we had a frustrating almost hour while other people in the group faffed around and collected things they'd forgotten and we waited for the van, meaning we didn't set off until 8am. Frustrating at that time of day as we could have had another hour in bed. Grrr. Drove for two hours to Cotopaxi park, stopping for 'breakfast' at a petrol station selling only junk and fried sandwiches (buy something at the 'Magic Bean' before you set off - far better). At the park we drove slowly up the exact same road we'd be cycling down, which removed some of the mystery. Bikes were OK but not great - limited suspension, and the brakes on my first one were really hard to squeeze. We'd been told we'd be back between 4 and 5pm but actually were back by 3:15, making us wonder if we'd missed part of the trip, especially with the late start. The 8 volcanoes we'd been promised weren't pointed out to us either. On the positive side, Diego our guide spoke very good English, switched my bike for me to one with better brakes, apologised several times for the delayed start in the morning, and served up a really delicious lunch part way down. The transport to and from the park was also really comfortable and it was nteresting to see the volcano from near the top. Overall, a bit disappointing for the price. It's a shame as pretty small things could have made it far better. Not helped by some rubbish weather (clearly not Biking Dutchman's fault!). Pick a good day, and try and pin them down on exactly when you'll be leaving and returning. If you only do one biking trip in South America, Death Road in Bolivia is far better (use Vertigo company).

Fabulous cycling adventure

A friend and I took the four day cycling trip with Biking Dutchman and it was absolutely amazing. We cycled down volcanoes, through mountain villages and stunning valleys. Fernando, our guide, was excellent - very knowledgeable and always happy to help and to give advice. I am a novice cyclist and could go at my own pace, I never felt rushed to keep up with other cyclists. I canīt recommend this company highly enough; if you enjoy cycling and wonderful scenery then this is the trip for you.
