Imagine driving slowly through an arid safari park containing over 300 rescued donkeys, your truck surrounded by groups of 20 or more donkeys at a time, with several poking their heads into your truck window, begging for a snack! It's amazing! We visited the Donkey Sanctuary in May 2008 for the first time in 2 years, and were delighted to see how the park has been expanded, and how healthy the donkeys looked. The front of the park now has separate pens for mother and baby donkeys, orphaned donkeys, and iguanas and land tortoises, as well as a gift shop and restrooms. The drive-through Donkey Paradise Safari Park is in the back, and slated for another expansion in 2009. This is a "must see" for animal lovers visiting Bonaire. Be sure to take your camera, some old bread, fruit or vegetables to feed the donkeys and tortoises, $6 per person entry fee plus extra $$ for donating to the Donkeys Help Foundation, and plan to arrive between 10 am and 3 pm to allow yourself about 2 hours to see the whole park. To find it, drive south toward Belnem, and take the first left turn after the airport, at the Donkey Sanctuary sign, then go 2.4 km on the bumpy and dusty dirt road to the entrance. It's definitely worth the drive!
