Before You Do Anything, See the City Walls

Touring the city walls in Dubrovnik should be not only a required activity for visitors but also the very first thing that you should do in the city. Walking around the walls gives you a vivid picture of what life is like inside Old Town and will also show you gorgeous views of the water, the island of Lokrum and the mountains behind the city .For a reasonable price you will see how beautiful this part of Dubrovnik is and get an idea of what else there is to see beyond the city walls. But as others have pointed out - the walls can quickly become jammed with tourists. There is not much room to pass along the walls despite the many lookout points. As with many tourist activities the earlier you go the better. We particularly enjoyed seeing Buza I and Buza II from the walls as well as well as looking at the Lovrinj Fort and down along the water behind the Rector's Palace. From these various vantage points its hard to imagine that nearly half the city was damaged in the Balkan Wars of the 90's so beautiful is it.

A trip to Croatia without walking the ancient walls of Dubrovnik would be incomplete. But beware fellow travellers with fear of heights! I made it 3/4 of the way around before completely losing my nerve. In the meantime, I had to work my way around other tourists completely enjoying (and mostly blocking) the 18-inch wide sections of the walkways. It was great to get to the different bastions along the way as they were wide enough to calm my fears. The rest of my group were sorely tempted not to make fun the whole way. I guess not everybody understands the irrationality. Just remember, the walkway is at the TOP of the walls, and try to enjoy the views.

One visit is not enough. I plan to return again soon. We set off as soon as they opened at 8.00am on a warm August morning this year. Great light effects on the sea and the stone walls. Took a personalised guided tour, just the two of us, and well worth the 50 euro each . Learned about every twist and turn the gorgeous and imposing walls make. But only got half way around in two hours, (my fault- too many photo op's, too hard to resist) with a well-needed cafe break along the way. This is the great attraction that sets Dubrovnik apart from any other gorgeous place in the world. I suggest doing this tour on the first morning of arrival, as it's the best orientation to Dubrovnik, and sets it out for you spatially and historically. From here, you see the entire Old Town, the sea and islands, and the surrounding hills. Gets VERY warm July and August, so timing, fluids, a shady hat, and comfy rubber-gripped sandals essential.

Wonderful

Fabulous visit to most impressive walls which are huge and offer great views of city. Fairly strenuous walking including steps, so go early or late if a very hot day. One of the best and best value ways to spend half a day in this great city. Don't miss.
