Don't be deterred by the throngs of tourists, the line up moves fairly quickly. There were hordes of people but it only took two tram rides ahead of us for us to get going.
The tram ride itself is fun and those with a faint heart or height-phobic will have a good thrill. At one point, the tram ride does a bit of a sway and you feel those G forces kick in (but it's short lived).
When you finally get to the top after a innumerable more escalators, the view is absolutely stunning. If you can, go in the evening right before the sunsets so you can get that dusky twilight exposure in your pics. Then get the real nice pics when all the daylight is gone.
My tip is if you want to save a bit of money, buy a one-way ticket up to the top, but catch a bus down. There's a few bus routes linked to the bottom of the mountain that don't take much more longer than the tram ride down, but much cheaper.
A must do - but avoid the Queue

Took the family here in March 08 and it is a definate must do. We walked thorugh the streets to the lower tram station as it was cool and we were all energetic. The queue at the bottom was long and took a while to get through, it went out of the station and around the corner. I think we waited at least 20 trams on the way up and got on the first one on the way down. The bus up-tram down option sounds good.
At the top the views are great and a large shopping centre had my wife's and my kids attention. We had lunch at Bubba Gump's which was quite pricey for Hong Kong, however was a holiday experience for the whole family that was worth the extra.
Best view of Hong Kong

We went to Victoria Peak in August 2008, going up on the tram but came back down using the No. 15 bus. Would definitely recommend taking the bus rather than the tram. Benefits of taking the No. 15 bus are 1) leaves from star ferry terminal 2) Avoid tram queues 3) much better views (including Wan Chai) 4) cheaper than tram at only HK$10 each way. The view from the top was magnificent and much much better once the sun had set as skyscrapers? colour lights all went on. Best time to go is just before sunset which is the busiest time so take the bus not the tram. We ended up spending a few hours visiting the nature walk, the shopping malls and taking time to eat in the restaurants. Unlike many other similar attractions in other cities, there is quite a lot of choice of food and shopping up there. Another tip, there is a free viewing area on top of the mall rather than paying to go on the newer Sky Terrace which you have to pay for.
Dont miss the nature walk

took bus 15 from the ferry, all the way to the top for $9HK, and was not disappointed by the views only the bus can offer, (sat on top level of an A/C double decker). bus 15c only goes to the tram station, so for a little extra its worth it to go all the way to the top.
once on top, we took in view from the galleria mall. nobody on the roof viewing area but us, and in my opinion everybit as good as the view i would have got from the observation tower, but since i didnt pay to go the observation tower i cant be sure.
took the 60min nature walk around the peak. this is a "DONT MISS" the overlook offers a unique view looking down the center of the harbor with HK and Kowloon on the right and left. the walk is relatively flat and easy, just a little long. theres also a small waterfall along the way.
took the tram one-way down for $22HK, and wasnt impressed, i liked the bus ride better, but glad i got to experience both routes this way for less than the roundtrip ticket with the tram alone. took bus 15c back to the ferrys, sat atop an open air double decker to complete the experience.
Must see in Hong Kong

We took the ferry from the pier at Kwooloon to the island. The ticket price was $7HKD for adult and half price for kids. The boat trip took only few minutes. From the island we took the double decker bus 15C to the peak tram. Make sure you get on upper deck. The upper deck is an open deck so you can see the hongkong skylines well.
You must take the tram to the peak. Make sure you are on the right side of the train as you are going up. The right side has all the views. At the peak go to the terrace. It is included in the tram ride. The view at the Terrace is great. You can see the HongKong skyline. It is a beautiful sight to see.
