1 Day White Water Rafting, Aug 2008
Reviewed by A TripAdvisor Member on Aug 24, 2008

We were picked up on time from our Hotel in Chiang Mai without any problems. The drive to the rapids takes about an hour and a half which was fine. We stopeed half way at a small bar/juice place. There were several different white water rafting and rafting set ups at the river when we got there but it soon became apparent that Siam River Adventures was the more upstanding one. They gave us a good lunch and drinks before we set off. Safety was a clear priority as they gave us all briefs and had guides in each boat, 2 safety kyakers and people on the banks with lines in the tricky parts. None of the other organisations did this. It was very reassuring. When we finished they once again gave us food and drink before the drive back to the hotels. A thoroughly enjoyable day. Well worth a visit. They also took photos of the trip and put onto cd which you could buy at the end for 500baht, about 8 pounds when we were there.

Fantastic

Fantastic day out white water rafting. All of us decided it was the best thing we had done on our holiday in Chiang Mai. So impressed with the briefing and the safety aspect of this company. We had 2 Kayaks following us, along with guides on the river bank waiting for us to zoom past. Brilliant fun and very exciting. They also picked up on the fact that my daughter didn't want to go down the faster rapids so she was dropped off higher up and driven further down to join us again. A very good day out and well worth the money.

Really good day out

Surprised there aren't more reviews for this, as it is justifiably very popular and I unreservedly recommend to anyone who wants a bit of excitement in an environment where safety is obviously taken very seriously. We went late July and had a fantastic time. Its a fairly full day from hotel pickup until the return around 16.00. We were in a group of eight (ages 18-51) which naturally split into two rafts of 4 + the raft leader. We met up with some other groups - I think there were 5 rafts in all for our trip. The safety briefing left some of us confused. Too many instructions! However it all became fairly obvious once we got in the rafts and did some practice. Bottom line is do what the leader tells you and enjoy! Our leader was superb. His expertise made all of us feel safe even when doing grade 4 rapids which looked (and were) daunting. Safety people were stationed at all the major rapids and we had some kind of a superman in a kayak who provided actual on-river support. Be clear - this is not a gentle riverboat cruise. You will get wet and you will experience several adrenaline rushes and feel knackered at the end. One raft did capsize but this was a good opportunity to see how efficiently and quickly the Siam River guys responded - they were magnificent. Oh - and I fell in - which is too embarrassing to go into. Loads of very tired but smiling faces at the end of the day. I thoroughly recommend getting the photo cd (pity this can't be provided free like at Patara) as the photos were of a very high quality and are an excellent record of a truly excellent day.

I'll second that!!! A definate must-do

Such a fun experience!!! The Thai river guides were superb and they definitely knew how to have fun and made the whole experience a blast! Safety was top priority, with an indepth briefing before rafting, including plenty of instruction and then practice when in the water. There were 3 kayaks following us just in case anything happened, (nothing did). We got an excellent DVD of photos at the end and there was the option of a T-shirt. All in all it was fabulous and I'll definitely be back to sample it again, maybe in the rainy season if I'm brave enough!

White water rafting-a must do!

Even if you have never white water rafted before like me, you will love this day trip in Mae Taeng, near the Elephant Nature Park (another must do!). My 13 year-old daughter and I signed up for the full day rafting experience directly through Siam River Adventures http://www.siamrivers.com/home/default.asp. Safety is their number one concern and it really shows. Jason, the owner, was so accommodating and his concern for my daughter's safety was very appreciated although unnecessary since we all rafted down the river successfully! He even kayaked down the river with us the whole way to make sure we were safe. All the Thai river guides are experienced and most importantly know how to have fun! Siam River Adventures was the first operation to do this eco-adventure down the Mae Taeng River so they know the river very well. I would do this tour again and again. Very highly recommended.
