This was located just outside the moat which surrounds the centre of Chiang Mai. It consists of street side stalls which occupy both sides of the main road and markets inside and underneath buildings. The Night Baxaar started at 6pm and reamained open till the early hours. There are soo many stalls and places to eat. This is where you will find McDonalds, Subway, Pizza Hut if that is what you want also. The prices here we found to be very reasonable once we had compared them to other areas of Thailand. A genaral rule of thumb was to pay around a third of the original price quoted. You could easily spend a full night here or even two getting presents and things for yourself. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here looking for things.
Went there Every Night

We were in Chiang Mai for 3 nights and went there every night. If your hotel isn't near the Night Bazaar, don't worry as there are a lot of tuk tuks waiting around the streets.
This was the best shopping experience in my opinion of all of Thailand. I thought it was better than the Chatuchak Weekend Market and Patpong in Bangkok. The sellers are very willing to bargain with you. Never accept the first offer and if you can't get the price you want, there is more than likely another vendor that sells the same item. You can find a wide variety of stuff here including clothes, lamps, DVDs, soap carvings, spices, wood carvings, and much more. We also ate at Ping Ping Seafood Market at the Night Bazaar for 2 nights. Their fish in lemongrass was to-die for.
A must-do in Chiang Mai

Be sure to visit the Night Bazaar. Stallholders line both sides of the street and prices are really competitive. I bought a very cheap bikini and some lovely saa paper cards and writing sets. Inside the main market building, on the bottom floor, there are a lot of local handicrafts and artists' works, also at great prices. One of the best things about the market is the super-cheap food court on the opposite side of the road. You can enjoy your food in a fairylight garden setting, and there's free entertainment such as traditional Thai dancing on a large stage.

Good place to meet the locals and soak into the experience! Great place to try some local food for cheap too.
Know what you are looking for and bargain hard. Don't be afraid to walk away because there are many similar shops around.
Great for keeping yourself amused at night when the attractions are shut. Don't forget to get your foot massage to soothe those aching feet from the day's walking!
Shop around and be smart

I went 3 nights in a row to the night markets in Chiang Mai. They were GREAT! The vendors seemed much more friendly and willing to negotiate than in most places in Bangkok (where I've lived for a year). BUT, you kind of need to know your stuff. If you can speak Thai, do it, even a little bit. If you smile and play the "game" you are more likely to have a fun experience. But, remember, their first price is ALWAYS going to be a bit outrageous. But, don't insult them by asking for 20% of the asking price! If you shop around and get a good idea of what everyone is asking, you will have some leverage. I was looking for some Crocs (sandals) and they were priced anywhere from 150-280 baht. Polo shirts some may start at 400 baht, depending on how dumb you look, but you can get them for 150 if you know your stuff. Look around and don't just jump at any price. But, also remember, that this is their living, so don't cheat them. Play fair and you'll all come out ahead!
