The Chateau d'Angers is a castle rather than the typical French Chateau.
The building is really impressive with 17 towers overlooking the River Loire.
Originally the site was a neolithic encampment and it continued to be a site of residence.
The first fortification came in the 9th century when a lookout station was constructed.
Work began on the current castle in the 13th century and continued for 300 years.
The battlements and most of the castle is open to the public for a small entrance fee.
Perhaps the most impressive exhibit is the revelation gallery which displays a fantastic tapestry woven in 1375 depicting 70 scenes of the apocalypse. The tapestry is huge being over 100 metres long in detailes handwork that still retains colour and life. Even a man like me with no interest in needlework was impressed.
Parking can be difficult nearly in the week so it's best to visit on Saturdays or Sundays when on street parking is available outside the castle.
While you are there the Magnificent Cathedral is only a two minute walk along cobbled streets but that will be another story!
A special place to visit!!

We visited the Loire Valley recently, one of the highlights and not often visited by too many tourists is the Chateau at Angers and the superb Tapestry. Well worth the visit in a beautiful town!
