Traveler Reviews

Absolutely a must to experience with GREAT island food & view
Reviewed by Roxycat_10 on Aug 17, 2010

When I read some of the negative reviews I had to take a step back & would like to remind these individuals that you are not in the States you are in the Bahamas. Relax just as the islanders do. With all the beauty & friendly people what else could you ask for! We had the most wonderful experience dining at Big D's. The native food was delicious. Their specialty is conch as their name impies. It is as fresh as it can get. While we were there 2 young boys just brought in fresh conch that they found in the bay. Patrick or "mice" as his friends call him is what they call a conch chef. He has 20 years experience with preparing conch. While we waiting for food he showed us how he removes the conch from the shell & fillets it. We decided instead of a meal we would just order appetizers so that we could sample several items on the menu. I know everyone's taste differs, but what we ordered was wonderful. We had the scourched conch, conch salad, fried conch & grouper. You can't go wrong if you want genuine island food. The view is great. Service is fine, but let me remind you that you are on island time. Relax & Enjoy

Delicious food and friendly service!

We visited Big D's while we were staying at the Grand Isle Resort and Spa. Its not far from there and totally worth the trip. The restaurant itself is very colorful and charming. The food was fresh and delicious and the beach is beautiful. While we waited for our food, we walked by the water and checked out the bulldozer that is in the ocean. *You can buy conch shells for about $10 and they even had a couple of king conch shells.

We love big D's great food and service. Try the fritter one of the best on the island. We had no kids but family friendly.

Big D's - true local atmosphere, but worst meal we had in Exuma
Reviewed by tcmarley on Feb 28, 2010

We just got back from Exuma and stayed at the Grand Isle. I know that all food prices are high in Exuma but we wanted to go to Big D's to experience some real Exuma culture and good fresh food. We were planning to go for lunch but due to some bad weather the last few days of our vacation we decided to try it for dinner based on all the good reviews. It is a $20 + tip cab ride from Grand Isle resort and we were happy seeing the place knowing that it looked authentic and the food should be great. Inside it does have the authentic atmosphere of a shack on the beach (good) and a bar with locals and tourists who all seemed very happy. For the food, we ordered drinks and had a $12 breaded shrimp appetizer... not more than a cheap Swanson?s frozen breaded shrimp dish you would by from the grocery store anywhere in the states. We were hoping that the meals would be better. I ordered the $14.50 Cracked Conch dish and my wife had the $26.50 Cracked Lobster. When our meals arrived my conch was cold (after breading and deep frying it, it must have been pre-made or ??? because it should have been at least luke warm). My wife's lobster was tough and barely edible, not at all what we were hoping for. We had two more drinks and skipped desert. When we got the bill, with the automatically included 15% tip, it came to $91!!! I gave our waitress $100 and we sat around and finished our drinks and waited for our cab ride back to the resort..... we were waiting about 10 minutes and our waitress never came back with my change. She must have just assumed that I would just give her the extra tip... we were completely disgusted with the meal and charges that we just wanted to leave. I was thinking that the extra $9 that they received from my change due would cost them much more over the long run when I wrote this review anyway. All in all it was a $79 meal with two Kaliks and two mixed drinks, $21 for the tip and $25 for the cab ride, so $125 total. It was the worst $125 meal that we have ever had in all of our travels in the Caribbean and Mexico. We mentioned the meal and the issues to the staff at the Grand Isle the next day (our last day) and they said they could contact Big D's and work it out, but I did not care to. The couple of dinners that we had from the Grand Isle Pallappa Restaurant were in the $75 - $90 range with appetizers and the same type of food and they were excellent. Big D's does not deserve a #1 rating and all the hype it gets. I am not writing this to bash them, just to forewarn anyone who is expecting something great. Try it for lunch maybe for the fresh conch salad, but dinner was a big disappointment.
