Veya. Veya. Veya. 'Nuf Said!
Reviewed by ejcrowe on Jul 11, 2010

After packing our suitcases and feeling suitably melancholy, we rallied ourselves for our final meal at Veya, which is hands-down our favorite place for dinner. We always choose it for our last evening meal on the island because anything else would invite comparison and come up lacking. This was our fourth visit over the course of three vacations, and Chef Carrie never ceases to impress with the consistency of the quality and her inventiveness. The atmosphere is a soothing, sophisticated one with the feeling of a treetop escape. After the hot johnnycakes (I LOVE those!) and the amuse-bouche of spicy pumpkin soup, I started with the Moroccan spiced shrimp cigars despite their cilantro content (I?m not allergic to cilantro but I deeply loathe it) partly because so many people have raved about them online, partly because I wanted to make the leap and trust the chef?s ability to balance flavors to perfection. I wasn?t at all disappointed. The cilantro was present, to be sure, but the other flavors were so intense that I honestly didn?t mind it. DH started with the calamari and he also was quite ?sassified.? For my main course, I had the appetizer of grilled watermelon with poached shrimp, fresh mint, and candied pecans, and it was blissful. DH had the vanilla-cured duck breast accompanied by wilted spinach and au gratin potatoes. I really love the way the chef uses ingredients in ways that seem counter-intuitive to me, like using vanilla and watermelon to a savory effect, but I also appreciate that nothing on the menu seems over-the-top?just the best, freshest ingredients served up in delightfully unexpected ways. Though we love the dense, rich coconut cake on the menu, it was simply too much after our meal, so we asked if we could just have a serving of the coconut-lime sorbet that they use as an accent on one of their other desserts and they were happy to comply. It ended up being the perfect note to end on?light and refreshing, with the puckery citrus of the lime balanced by the coconut?s creaminess. DH discovered a rum called Methusalen that just might supplant El Dorado as his favorite, and two shots of that, plus a rum punch and a glass of wine for me and a shared bottled water, brought our total to US $176, plus additional tip.

Consistently Excellent

On our third visit in the past three years, Veya continues to impress. Excellent food - - our favorite meal on the island. Great atmosphere and pleasant but not overbearing service. In the upper range of restauarant pricing on Anguilla, but we highly recommend Veya for a special dining experience.

Good ambiance and food

The restaurant is set high up on a hill surrounded by trees in what feels like an old plantation house. We ate on the veranda and had a lovely evening. The food was very good and so was the service. We enjoyed the music (on Friday night) and would recommend it for a special night out. Most restaurant prices are high on Anguilla and this falls in the upper range but not at the top. We will return for sure!

Excellent Restaurant

This is our new favorite restaurant in Anguilla. It started off with excellent drinks. We enjoyed the bread basket filled with hot johnny cakes, pumpkin?, and banana bread. I ordered the shrimp cigar appetizer, which I highly recommend. We both had the snapper with papaya, mint, cilantro, and avocado, which all blended together in perfection. Add delicious trio of exotic sorbet for dessert with french press coffee and this was our best meal the whole week. That is saying a lot considering the multitude of quality restaurants on this small island. The chef/owner came out to check on how we were enjoying everything. The waitstaff was attentive throughout the meal and very knowledgable about the menu. The tree house like setting, wood beamed ceilings, and lush tropical gardens surronding the restaurant made for an atmosphere to match the great food and service. Will be back next time we visit Anguilla.

Oneof our TOP 5 on the Island

Veya ? we read the reviews on this and other forums and knew we had to visit Jerry?s & Carrie?s place and we are glad we did. So much so we wanted to go back Sunday for a repeat but they were closed... Since it was our first night (Friday) on the Island I e-mailed them to make our reservations and Carrie responded promptly. Food and service was fantastic ? our choice of food for the night: Started with Moroccan Spiced Shrimp Cigars and Skirt steak lettuce wrap, thought we get PF Chang style wraps I was bummed my wife ordered this to start but we were glad she did. The shrimp cigars were great but her skirt steak lettuce wraps were prepared perfectly. Our main entree was for me Grilled Jerk Spiced Tuna and it was spiced but very tasty. My wife had the Grilled Crayfish and it was cooked perfect. The reason I wanted to go back Sunday was to try their Five Spiced Roast Pork Tenderloin. Next trip! We are watching what we eat so we didn?t have their Warm Chocolate Cake, which sounded delicious another reason we were heading back Sunday..We even were going to go there just for desert as our other evening meals were pre-booked but we were so full after our other meals we never made it back there. Total for meal with tip & drinks $164.00 This is a must place to eat at least once if not twice while visiting Anguilla. Highly recommend nice setting. A lot of restaurants were closed Monday lunch time so we hit the Cafe at Veya downstairs. Try their Anguilla Panini ? chicken, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers in a nice garden style setting. $12. for the Panini and worth it. This was our 6th or 8th ? we lost count trip to Anguilla. We ate dinner at Barrel Stay, Oliver?s Seaside, Straw Hat & Jacala during our trip. Also part of our TOP 5 on Anguilla for dinner!.
